Such legislation would make Pennsylvania the first major fossil fuel-producing state to adopt a carbon-pricing program. Shapiro's proposal comes as environmentalists are pressuring him to do more to fight climate change in the nation’s No. 2 gas-producing state and as the state's highest court considers a challenge to his predecessor's plan to adopt a carbon-pricing program. Currently, about 60% of the state's electricity comes from natural gas-fired power plants, and the 50% requirement could hurt demand for electricity from those plants. Shapiro’s administration did not provide many details of his strategy Wednesday, including how much money power plants would pay or how the average household electric bill would be affected.

A treasure trove for Biden watchers and historiansIn the interview, Biden speaks at length and fluently, easily recalling in-depth details about his vice presidency, family life and lore. One good week does not make a campaignOne person not ready to let the age issue go is Trump, who himself is 77. The former president’s focus on Biden’s age reflects the fact that one good week will not change a harsh reality of the coming eight months. Outside Washington and the self-contained world of politics and campaigns, concerns about Biden’s age will be hard to shift. The age issue was rumbling long before it became a major campaign issue.

A majority of Hispanics, and even a plurality of Black voters, said Biden’s policies would cause inflation to rise, the survey found. You can’t not make the contrast and comparison.”These negative retrospective assessments of the Biden and Trump economic records create huge headwinds for the president. “Voters—even past Biden voters who disapprove of his economic record—clearly reject what Trump and Republicans are offering,” Democratic pollster Margie Omero said in an email. After voters were exposed to Biden’s populist arguments, assessments of his economic record improved in the group’s polling, Clark said. But even after hearing that case, most voters in the group’s surveys still gave Biden negative marks for his economic performance, the study found.

The American Dream is under siege

Parents of young children are making difficult choices to afford child care — or they’re opting to evade it by dropping out of the workforce altogether. Even as the inflation rate has cooled across the US economy, child care remains a sore spot for many families. The weekly price of day care for a toddler surged 9% in 2023, according to Care.com, a marketplace for child care. Of course, Allison is hardly alone in feeling like the American Dream has been more difficult — and expensive — to attain than imagined. “The American dream is being taken away from the younger generation by the housing affordability challenges,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors.

NEW YORK (AP) — After 46 years, Steve Replin has decided to give up his office space. About 23% of U.S. office space is available, compared with 16% before the pandemic, according to global real estate advisor Avison Young. Garnett is looking for a smaller space – 1,200 square feet or so -- in suburban Huntsville, closer to where most of his clients live. The pandemic taught her she could work in a smaller space, but she still saw value in having office space with a physical library. Saul said she was able to downsize her library, filled with samples and a necessary part of the firm’s office space.

Vice President Kamala Harris, confronted with those same polls, is much less dismissive. Overall, Biden and Harris hold similar approval ratings, but Harris’ ratings among these key subgroups have varied, suggesting views of the vice president are not as deeply entrenched. Workers at Ford voted 69.3% in favor of the pact, which passed with nearly a 15,000-vote margin in balloting that ended early Saturday. Earlier this week, GM workers narrowly approved a similar contract. They also agreed in principle to bring new electric-vehicle battery plants into the national union contract. This provision will give the UAW an opportunity to unionize the EV battery plants plants, which will represent a rising share of industry jobs in the years ahead. Contracts with the auto companies should also lead to higher wages at auto-parts supply companies and in other industries, Wheaton said.

"I love Joe Biden. The contrast between the popularity of the Biden agenda and the unpopularity of its pitchman, even among some party loyalists, is a major concern for Democrats going into 2024. Biden's approval rating is hovering around 40%, near the lowest level of his presidency, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll. The fallout was quick: Nevada, which saw a 44 percentage-point jump in congenital syphilis from 2021 to 2022, was supposed to get more than $10 million to bolster its STD program budget. In 2021, there were 77.9 cases of congenital syphilis per 100,000 live births. Doing so in a timely manner can prevent congenital syphilis. Mississippi is also seeing an uptick in congenital syphilis cases, which a recently published study showed rose tenfold between 2016 and 2022. Agency head Dr. Dan Edney said one of his top priorities now is finding money from other parts of the state's health budget.

Rite Aid filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sunday following slumping sales and a series of lawsuits. Rite Aid, which has over 47,000 employees, has struggled in recent years to compete against larger peers like CVS and Walgreens Boots Alliance, as well as Amazon. Rite Aid has faced growing competition from direct-to-consumer pharmacy startups as well as medication deliveries from the likes of Amazon and Uber. Rite Aid also experienced supply chain challenges after changing supplier for many of its perishable consumer goods and shrink "continued to be a significant headwind," Burr said. The world has changed since Biden visited a familiar place to talk up familiar topics, though. Other domestic matters also are competing for political attention, with the fight over choosing the next Republican House speaker potentially imperiling continued U.S. aid to Ukraine and a United Auto Workers strike entering its fifth week. Biden's reelection campaign has joined the White House in stressing that being president always means juggling multiple pressing concerns. Whatever the message, the president can help himself politically Friday just by staying focused on Pennsylvania, said longtime Democratic strategist Robert Shrum. It's not surprising they're trying to bust out of the 2020 Trump coalition, because the 2020 Trump coalition is not sufficient for him to win. Several polls do show him somewhat improved among Black voters. A Quinnipiac University poll in September, for example, showed Trump with 25% support among Black voters. HARRISBURG, Pa. Bob Casey after losing in last year’s crowded Republican primary. McCormick's aides have sent invites to a “special announcement” by McCormick at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. McCormick, 58, was heavily recruited to run again by the party establishment and, thus far, has a clear GOP primary field. He is a stalwart of Pennsylvania’s Democratic Party — the son of a former two-term governor and Pennsylvania's longest-ever serving Democrat in the Senate. McCormick, who grew up near Bloomsburg, is the son of Pennsylvania’s first state university system chancellor.

A 60% majority of registered voters indicated in the poll that they do not consider Biden "mentally up for the job" of being president. Majorities of registered voters said they disapproved of how Biden has handled the economy (59%), inflation (63%) and growth of the middle class (58%), according to the poll. Nearly two-thirds of registered voters, 63%, said they viewed the strength of the U.S. economy negatively, including 36% who called it "poor." Inflation is a major pain point: 74% of respondents said it has moved in the wrong direction over the past year.
